Ecologic Institute's Susanne Altvater participated in a workshop during the European Climate Change Adaptation conference (ECCA) 2013 about improved transnational cooperation with regard to climate change adaptation. Her presentation about the currently developed "Baltic Sea Region Strategy for Cooperation on Climate Change Adaptation at different levels" is available for download.

The EU strategy for climate adaptation has been adopted in April 2013. It has to interact with national and macro-regional adaptation strategies for full effectiveness. With regard to national strategies,Read more

Grit Martinez' presentation during the European Climate Change Adaptation conference (ECCA) 2013 dealt with the perception of climate risks and the reasons why different measures and attitudes emerged in two communities at the German Baltic Sea coast. The research was based on qualitative analysis and document research including chronicles and exploration of sites of local coastal heritage. Special attention was given to the respective cultural traditions in the communities, e.g. images of nature, people's relationships to the sea and their sense of place, economic development as well asRead more

How to Best Adapt to Climate Change? - Insights from Applied Research

  • Read more about How to Best Adapt to Climate Change? - Insights from Applied Research

In March 2013, the first European Climate Change Adaptation (ECCA) conference took place in Hamburg (Germany). The overarching topic was "Integrating Climate into Action," with the objective of translating shared ideas into action for adaptation to climate change. Such action could ensure reduced vulnerability and growing resilience to climate change in Europe and internationally. The Ecologic Institute presented the results of three projects concerning climate change adaptation issues. The presentation slides are available for download.

In response to the growing pressures from climate change, the maintenance and restoration of natural habitats has emerged as an effective strategy to increase the resilience of ecosystems and support sustainable livelihoods. However, the integration and implementation of such ecosystem-based approaches is still lacking while awareness of the concept and its potential remains substantially low. Sandra Naumann gave a presentation on "The use of ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation and mitigation: barriers and success factors" at the European Climate Change Adaptation (ECCARead more

Literaturrecherche und Analyse der Bewirtschaftungspläne von 18 deutschen und europäischen Flussgebietseinheiten

Climate change will most likely impact the effectiveness and cost of measures to improve water quality. This must be taken into account in the future when selecting measures in accordance with the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD). Until now, the consequences of climate change have not been systematically incorporated into the economic analyses called for by the WFD. A new study in the RADOST focus topic "Water Management and Agriculture" evaluates analytical approaches used to date, thereby contributing to the necessary discussion on how existing and future programs could consider and...Read more

The EU research project "Bottom-Up Climate Adaptation Strategies for a Sustainable Europe" (BASE) supports action for sustainable climate change adaptation in Europe. BASE makes experiential and scientific information on adaptation meaningful, transferable and easily accessible to decision-makers at all levels. The project is funded under the EUs 7th Research Framework Programme (FP7).

The challenges

Climate change may lead to serious ecological, economic and social disruptions across Europe. Carefully planned adaptation can reduce these disruptions and in some cases yieldRead more

An analysis of project implementation and cost-effectiveness

This report presents an analysis of the Peatland Rewetting Project in Belarus, which explores the potential of carbon emission reductions from rewetting degraded or depleted peatland located within the Belarusian territory and the opportunity to trade credits representing these reductions in a voluntary carbon market. Peatland rewetting as applied in the Belarus Project represents an ecosystem-based approach to climate change adaptation and mitigation and is approached in this report as such. The report is available for download.Read more
