The biodiversity team at Ecologic Institute is working on German, European and global policy-related research projects focusing on nature conservation and ecosystem restoration across the rural-urban landscapes. We are looking forward to receiving applications from candidates with expertise in related policy areas, with a particular focus on current EU and national policy developments and an understanding of linkages with related areas, such as land use, climate, water and urban planning. In the position, you will work within an interdisciplinary team of highly motivated scientists who are advancing the topic of biodiversity and its mainstreaming into related policy fields.

Your tasks:

  • Manage and implement research projects for clients from Germany and the EU, including overseeing communication with project partners and clients.
  • Lead and contribute to the acquisition of new research projects.
  • Conduct policy analyses, governance assessments, literature reviews, interviews, desk-based research, and data analysis as well as oversee case study work.
  • Write reports, policy briefs and recommendations, guidance documents, newsletter stories, tailored dissemination materials, factsheets, and further materials in English and German.
  • Organize and implement project-related events and facilitate stakeholder engagement processes.
  • Represent Ecologic Institute at national and international events and meetings, including presenting projects and research results.

Your profile:

  • Relevant Master's or PhD degree in e.g. environmental science, nature conservation, geoecology, geography, landscape/urban ecology, or environmental governance.
  • At least 5 years of relevant work experience, including project management and acquisition (administration and content development).
  • Strong knowledge of German and European biodiversity policy (e.g. EU Nature Directives, Natura 2000 network, EU and DE Biodiversity Strategies, Draft Nature Restoration Law, Aktionsprogramm Natürlicher Klimaschutz) as well as of associated financing instruments.
  • Comprehensive understanding of key biodiversity threats, trends and interdependencies with other land uses, and related governance and policy approaches, challenges and opportunities; knowledge of different ecosystems, especially peatlands and urban ecosystems, is beneficial.
  • Experience in project design and implementation in multi- and transdisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to work well both independently and in teams on several projects in parallel within a highly dynamic and international environment.
  • Enthusiasm for the topic and creativity for finding policy solutions that fit into the broader challenge of transformation towards sustainable societies.
  • Excellent written, presentation and verbal communication skills in German and English; other language skills are beneficial.

Our offer:

  • Employment contract (32 h – 40 h/week) limited to two years, with the intention of a long-term takeover.
  • Interesting projects with high policy relevance in a national, European and international context.
  • Pleasant working culture in an international and interdisciplinary team.
  • Flexible, family-friendly working environment, possibilities for remote working can be discussed.
  • Adequate remuneration, individual training opportunities and scope for development to deepen expertise.
