Diplom-Landschaftsökologe (Dipl. Landscape Ecologist)

Senior Associate

Team

Timo Kaphengst is a Senior Associate at Ecologic Institute. His work covers a wide range of topics in the areas of socio-ecological research, policy evaluation and transformation studies. He has worked on European biodiversity policies, regional transitioning towards renewable energies, international development cooperation, land use and land governance, biomass use, and the bioeconomy. He works in German and English and has knowledge of French and Italian.

Timo Kaphengst is particularly interested in the sustainable use of natural resources and how this goal can be achieved in different political and societal contexts. To address this topic, he draws from a wealth of professional experiences, which he's acquired at various governance levels, including global, European, national, regional and local. In dialogues and workshops he has acted as a moderator between diverse interests and perspectives, be it from research, policy, civil society and (regional) representatives, as well as stakeholders.

Timo Kaphengst was coordinator of the biodiversity team at Ecologic Institute until 2014. His work has had a particular focus on projects connecting biodiversity with other relevant issues, such as the development of green infrastructure in Germany and the EU, the role of biodiversity in development cooperation and the protection and valuation of biodiversity in freshwater ecosystems.

In addition, Timo Kaphengst has worked intensively on projects dealing with the sustainable use of biomass and bionenergy and, more recently, the governance of global land use and sustainable resource management. At the regional level, he investigated transition processes focusing on increasing renewable energies and explored the role of cooperatives and frontrunners in such processes. He is also interested in drivers and patterns of human behaviour and how these can be stimulated towards more sustainable life styles.

Before joining Ecologic Institute, Timo worked for the Leibniz-Institute of Agricultural Engineering in Potsdam (ATB) and was responsible for evaluating microeconomic aspects of biomass production.

Timo Kaphengst studied landscape ecology and nature conservation at the University of Greifswald (Germany). Here, he also developed his interest in theoretical and applied aspects of environmental ethics. During research trips to South Africa and Azerbaijan, he also investigated the ecological impacts of habitat fragmentation and intensive land use on bird species diversity.

Alongside his work at Ecologic Institute, Timo Kaphengst is affiliated with e-fect, a consultancy for dialogues, evaluation, environmental psychology, and coaching. Furthermore, he currently works as a freelance consultant for social innovation.
