Meredith Carter was a Transatlantic Fellow at Ecologic during October and November 2007. Meredith is the Manager of Environmental Services at the Otonabee Region Conservation Authority in Peterborough, Ontario Canada and joined Ecologic in order to gain an international perspective on watershed management issues, and participate directly in environmental policy development. Conservation Authorities are local watershed management agencies that deliver services and programs to protect and manage water and other natural resources in partnership with government, landowners and other organizations and there are 36 Conservation Authorities across Ontario. During her tenure at Ecologic, Meredith contributed to several projects related to water (EAQC WISE) and biodiversity (REMEDE).
While at Ecologic, Meredith also undertook an investigation of European watershed management practices, drinking water source protection, environmental governance models, and environmental policies. This investigation compared current programs and policies related to water management in Europe with those in Canada, particularly those related to the activities of Conservation Authoritities in Ontario. This comparison and other information gathered during this fellowship will be shared with the broader conservation community in Ontario and Canada to build the capacity of Conservation Authorities, Environmental Non-Governmental Organizations (ENGO’s), municipalities and agencies in order to more effectively address water and environmental issues.
