Dr. Jan Scharlau LLM
Dr. Jan Scharlau worked as a Fellow for Ecologic Institute and was a member of Ecologic Legal. His legal practice was focused on European environmental and energy law and policy. At the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), he supported the Energy Law and Climate Change Unit, especially in European emissions trading law. Dr. Jan Scharlau was admitted to the bar in 2010. He works in German and English and has a good knowledge of French.
Before he joined Ecologic Institute, Dr. Jan Scharlau worked in energy and emissions trading law for a leading European energy law firm. He has also lectured on European emissions trading law at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU Berlin, Germany). Before that, he worked for the Federal Foreign Office (AA) and the European Law Unit of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) during his post-graduate legal training in Berlin.
Dr. Jan Scharlau holds a Ph.D. in law from HU Berlin and wrote his thesis on the governance effects of investment law, corporate law and financial reporting requirements for the environmental and social performance of listed companies. He graduated with a degree in law from the University of Münster. During his legal education, Dr. Jan Scharlau spent several years abroad. He received a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from Victoria University of Wellington. In New Zealand, he worked as a legal drafter for the Parliamentary Group of the Green Party of Aoteaoroa. He graduated from the School of Polish Law at Jagiellonski University of Krakow, was a research fellow at the College of Europe in Brugge and studied law at the University Paris V - René Descartes.
