Richard G. Tarasofsky, a Senior Policy Advisor at Ecologic Institute until 2008, was chosen to head the research programme on Sustainable Development of the Royal Institute of International Affairs (RIIA) in 2004. He is an international lawyer specialising in all aspects of environment and sustainable development law. He has recently led and worked on projects on trade, biodiversity, forests, fisheries, and EU environmental law. Among his portfolio of projects are: Consumer Protection and International Law; Global Governance, Trade and Sustainable Development; Intellectual Property Rights and the Conservation of Genetic Resources; Legal Analysis of the Bonn Meeting of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Access to Genetic Resources; Finding Synergies between Forest-Related Multilateral Environmental Agreements: international, EC, and national governance of forests. A native speaker of English, Richard Tarasofsky is fluent in French and German.

Richard Tarasofsky is also a member of the IUCN Commission on Environmental Law, the Editorial Board of the International Environmental Law Report, an Associate of the Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development, and an advisor for the Natural Resources Forum. He worked for the Environmental Law Centre of the IUCN (The World Conservation Union) from 1993 to 1998. While holding this position, he represented the IUCN at international negotiations and worked on many projects aimed at strengthening environmental law, including on trade and environment, forests, CITES and Antarctica. Since 1990, Richard Tarasofsky has been a member of the Ontario Bar. From 1992 to 1993, he worked as a lecturer and researcher at the Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development (FIELD), King’s College London, University of London. There his work was focused on Environmental Law, aspects of International Trade Law, Law of the Sea and EU Law.

Richard Tarasofsky studied Public International Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LL.M.), Law at the Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto (LL.B.) and Political Science (international relations) at McGill University in Montréal (B.A.).
