Etablierte Wirtschaftindikatoren wie das Bruttoinlandsprodukt (BIP) sind nützliche Indikatoren mit großem Einfluss auf öffentliche und private Entscheidungen. Sie sind jedoch unzureichend, wenn es um das Messen des menschlichen Wohlergehens geht und bieten wenige Informationen bezogen auf Umweltqualität und Nachhaltige Entwicklung. Dieses Projekt zielt darauf ab, durch qualitative und quantitative Untersuchungen Empfehlungen für neue Indikatoren zu entwickeln, die wirtschaftlichen Erfolg, menschliches Wohlergehen, Umweltschutz und langfristige Nachhaltigkeit messen.

Als Teil der beiden FP7 Projekte OPEN:EU und INSTREAM haben das Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) und das Ecologic Institut Berlin einen gemeinsamen Workshop organisiert. Experten, Statistiker, Entscheidungsträger und Vertreter von NGOs diskutierten wie Indikatoren zur Messung von Wohlfahrt und Nachhaltigkeit verbessert werden können.

Das Ecologic Institut veranstaltete vom 27. bis 28. September 2011 in Brüssel die Abschlusskonferenz von IN-STREAM. Die Konferenz setzte die Diskussion um alternative Wohlfahrtsindikatoren fort, fasste die Forschungsergebnisse von IN-STREAM zusammen und stieß eine intensive Diskussion mit internationalen Organisationen wie der Europäischen Umweltagentur, der OECD, UNEP, der Europäischen Kommission und des Global Footprint Networks an. Die Diskussion erfasste ein breites Forschungsspektrum um die Frage, wie gesellschaftliche Wohlfahrt gemessen werden sollte und produzierte wichtige Ergebnisse über die Identifikation und Quantifizierung von Abwägungsentscheidungen zwischen verschiedenen Kategorien der Nachhaltigkeit.

Bis heute haben gängige Wirtschaftsindikatoren wie das Bruttoinlandsprodukt den größten Einfluss auf Entscheidungen im aktiven Politikbetrieb. In diesem Zeitschriftenartikel erklärt Lucas Porsch, wie Zielkonflikte in der Nachhaltigkeitspolitik durch die Verbindung dieser Indikatoren mit Nachhaltigkeitsindikatoren besser gesteuert werden können.
