The Kyoto Protocol

November 1997 to January 1999
After protracted negotiations involving the highest political levels, the Kyoto Protocol to protect the global climate was adopted in 1997. Not only does it set, for the first time ever, quantitative limits for the emissions of greenhouse gases by industrialised countries, but it also introduced a number of complex and innovative mechanisms. Ecologic Institute supports negotiators at UN climate negotiations in China

End of the year, parties to the UN climate negotiations will meet in Cancun, Mexico, to continue their negotiations on the future of international climate protection. In preparation for this, thousands of delegates met in Tianjin, China, beginning of October to negotiate the way forward. Dr. Camilla Bausch and Dr. Ralph Bodle of Ecologic Legal continue to support the German delegation and EU team in the negotiations. In this capacity, they participated in the negotiations in China and will travel to Cancun at the end of November to continue this work.

Ecologic Institute at the Global Environmental Governance Forum

In early July 2009, the Global Environmental Governance Forum drew a historic gathering of past, present, and future environmental leaders in the small Swiss town of Glion. The Forum gathered for the first time all five successive Executive Directors of the UN Environment Programme: Maurice Strong, the Secretary-General of the first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment and the Rio Earth Summit; Mostafa Tolba; Elizabeth Dowdeswell; Klaus Töpfer; and Achim Steiner, the current Executive Director. Maria Ivanova, a partner of Ecologic Institute, is Director of the Global Environmental Governance Project, which hosted the Forum. R. Andreas Kraemer and Susanah Stoessel of Ecologic Institute were also in attendance.

Ecologic at the Climate Conference in Bali

The UN Climate Conference, held from 2 to 15 December 2007 in Bali, Indonesia, was followed with great interest by a global audience. The conference laid the foundation for negotiations on a comprehensive global climate protection regime post 2012. Ecologic was present at the conference through Dr. Sebastian Oberthür, Senior Associate, Dr. Camilla Bausch, Senior Fellow and Head of Climate and Energy, as well as Michael Mehling, Fellow.

Ecologic at the International Climate Conference in Montreal, Canada

The 11th conference of the parties (COP 11) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) took place in Montreal between 28 November and 9 December 2005. The conference simultaneously served as the first Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (KP) after its entry into force in early 2005 (COP/MOP 1). Ecologic, represented by Dr. Sebastian Oberthür, Senior Associate, and Dr. Camilla Bausch, Senior Fellow, attended and supported the German delegation.

JEEPL - Journal for European Enviromental & Planning Law

Matthias Buck, Simon Marr - both Ecologic Alumni - and  Moritz Reese from the German Environmental Advisory Council have become managing editors of JEEPL, a new Journal on EU environmental and planning law. The first issue was published in July 2004 on the overarching theme emissions trading.
