Countries such as Bangladesh face fundamental threats on their water resources from climate change. Significant demand exists for knowledge how to enhance institutional capacity and effectiveness of water management policies. This project objective is to investigate how Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) in different national contexts can enhance the capacity of different societies to adapt to climate change impacts. This project establishes therefore an international network of IWRM and adaptation experts and coordinates research events in six countries. In addition, it aims toRead more
This project took a closer look at regional institutions in the European electricity sector and how they could potentially contribute to a future EU energy governance as proposed by the EU Commission in its 2030 climate and energy package. Ecologic Institute produced a policy paper on the challenges and opportunities of regional cooperation for reaching the EU 2030 climate and energy targets.
At their December 2013 meeting, the Nature, Marine and Water Directors recognised the need to further strengthen the coordination and cooperation between the different policy areas: marine, water and nature/biodiversity. As a further step, the Directors agreed to organise a workshop with representation from the different policy areas to discuss common understanding of the issues at stake (2-3 December 2014, Brussels).
As background document to this joint Water-Marine-Biodiversity-Nature workshop, a report has been developed to provide an overview on how Member States haveRead more
The Renewable Energy Directive established a framework for promoting renewable energy development in all sectors, binding national targets and a mandatory target of 10% for all Member States for renewable energy use in transport. By now, the transposition can be considered as largely complete in the majority of Member States. Driven by the Commission's programme on Regulatory Fitness and performance: results and next steps (REFIT), the study aims at assessing the efficiency of measures and actions laid down in the Directive in view of achieving its outcomes. A focus is on theRead more

Ecologic Institute with support from the Heinrich Boell Foundation compiled a study to provide factual background to the debate on regulatory cooperation under TTIP. The study contains an overview of existing models for achieving regulatory harmonisation, with a focus on mechanisms already used between the US and EU, in trade agreements with third countries, at the multilateral level with US and EU involvement, and some particularly far-reaching examples of regulatory cooperation. The study also features brief overview of regulatory processes within the US, the EU and Germany in order toRead more
Ecologic Institute supports the Federal Environmental Agency and the German Federal Ministry of the Environment with the preparation of the second Meeting of the Parties (MOPP 2) of the Protocol on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (PRTR Protocol). The PRTR Protocol is an international agreement under the Aarhus Convention.
The Protocol has been ratified by most of the EU Member States, including Germany, and by the EU itself. Its parties are required to establish publicly and freely accessible pollutant release and transfer registers containing information on facility-Read more
Urban water use is a major pressure impacting the ecological status of European rivers. The DESSIN project promotes more sustainable, adaptive, and cost-effective urban water management through the testing and promotion of innovations. The project aims to demonstrate the benefits of innovative solutions to deal with water challenges with a focus on water quality and water scarcity. In addition, it develops a methodology for the valuation of ecosystem services which will help catalyse for innovation uptake.Read more
