Implementation of Natura 2000 and the Habitats and Birds Directives

This project was carried out by Ecologic Institute and UCL Centre for Law and the Environment for the EU's Committee of the Regions (CoR). It informed the CoR's ex-post Territorial Impact Assessment on Natura 2000 and the EU Birds and Habitats Directives in light of the European Commission's Fitness Check of the Directives ('REFIT'). Ecologic Institute contributed key components of a comprehensive review of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) as part of a consortium of institutions who specialise in environmental policy. Improving Climate Protection – for Paris and Beyond – Discussion Series

On behalf of the German Environment Agency, Ecologic Institute is carrying out the discussion series "Improving climate protection – for Paris and beyond." As part of the project, several expert workshops provide a platform for different stakeholder representatives to discuss and evaluate developments of the climate regime, the status of the UN climate negotiations and the outcome of the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that will be held in Paris in December 2015.Read more

River Basins and Financial Redistribution in Practice (EcoCuencas)

January 2015 to December 2017

This project aims at strengthening the financing of River Basin Organisations (RBOs) in Latin America. Adequate financing of RBOs is crucial for improving water management and increasing local capacities to prepare for and adapt to climate change. In order to achieve this aim, political and stakeholder dialogues on the role of financing in integrated water resources management will be facilitated, a guide on financing mechanisms will be developed and tested, and the relevance of financing mechanisms demonstrated in four pilot river basins. Best practice examples from Latin America and abroad will be collected and disseminated in the region.Read more

Compliance Checking of the Water Framework Directive and Floods Directive Implementation

January 2015 to December 2015

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) obliged Member States to develop the first River Basin Management Plans by 2009 and the second River Basin Management Plans by December 2015. Under its 'Framework contract to provide services to support the development and implementation of EU freshwater policies', the European Commission DG Environment awarded a Specific Contract to a European consortium to provide support in 'Compliance checking of the Water Framework Directive and Floods Directive Implementation'. Support to EU Wind Energy Technology Development and Demonstration

The overall objective of the project is to support the European Commission in assessing, programming, implementing and monitoring technology development and demonstration options for wind energy. The focus is on the reduction of the short and medium term costs for both on- and offshore wind electricity, as well as on the integration in the EU's smart electricity networks. In the context of this project, Ecologic Institute develops strategies and solutions for the uptake of new wind energy technologies on the basis of an assessment of possible barriers resulting from non-technological and environmental impacts of these technologies focusing on their cost aspects.Read more

Increasing resource efficiency of business aids to reduce waste, decrease the pressure on the environment, increase the competitiveness of European markets and to create jobs. Besides, increasing resource efficiency can help companies to minimize their costs. The main objective of the project is to assist Member States in improving and fostering policies to support businesses to become more resource efficient. Compliance Checking of the Water Framework Directive Implementation

The purpose of the programme of measures is to achieve the environmental objectives of the WFD. Mexican-German Climate Change Alliance: Moderation and Implementation of a Training Course to Establish an Emissions Trading Scheme in Mexico

December 2014 to February 2015

Within this project, Ecologic Institute contributed to improving the understanding of Mexican policy makers regarding the requirements and technical parameters of a national emissions trading system. Among Latin American countries, Mexico is a frontrunner when it comes to climate change policy and has started to take appropriate action at the national level. Measures adopted so far include the 2012 climate act as well as sectoral approaches such as the partial taxation of fossil fuels since the beginning of 2014 or several other measures (in particular efficiency measures in the building sector).Read more

RNE – Global and National Sustainable Development Goals and Expectations to the Institutions and Processes in Germany

In September 2015, the United Nations is expected to adopt the Post-2015-Agenda, which will contain universal goals for sustainable development. This agenda will not only set objectives for developing countries but will also address industrialised countries and their sustainability policies. Ecologic Institute supported the Council for Sustainable Development (RNE) in this project in analysing if and how the national sustainability strategy must be adapted and further developed in view of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).Read more
