Comparative Analysis of Current Proposals to Improve Energy Efficiency

September 2013 to November 2013
The existing measures in Germany are not sufficient to meet the efficiency targets of the Energy Concept and the requirements of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive. On behalf of the European Climate Foundation, Ecologic Institute has compared essential proposals aimed at increasing energy efficiency and deduced possible political demands. This short study was presented on December 2013 in the workshop "Energy Efficiency Models and EU Energy Efficiency Directive: Consensus for a Stronger Energy Efficiency Policy in Germany" in Berlin. A summary of this short study is available for download.Read more

The North Sea Grid Project, an initiative led by the European Climate Foundation (ECF) and E3G together with partners in Denmark, the Netherlands, and the UK, aims to promote an integrated offshore grid. The long-term objective is to couple power markets, to enable installation of offshore and onshore renewables while strengthening the grid’s resilience and improving security of supply. In Germany, Ecologic Institute conducts a workshop series to identify stakeholder views with respect to an integrated offshore grid and related aspects of cross-border cooperation. The workshopsRead more

Black Carbon Emissions from Kerosene Lamps

July 2013 to November 2013

Around 1.3 billion people worldwide still lack access to electricity. For many, kerosene (paraffin) is a common lighting fuel and kerosene lamp use is widespread in the developing world. Research has shown that these lamps emit significant amounts of black carbon, 20 times more than previously estimated. In this project, Ecologic Institute examines the current landscape of lighting efforts and initiatives, as well as market growth and development for modern, sustainable off-grid lighting alternatives.

Although kerosene lamps constitute a smaller overall source of black carbon thanRead more

Financial Instruments and Technical Assistance Facilities through LIFE Climate Action Sub-Programme

July 2013 to December 2013

A Mid-term Assessment of Europe 2020 from the Standpoint of EU Cities and Regions

June 2013 to February 2014
Ecologic Institute as part of a Framework Contract with the Committee of the Regions developed regional and national progress indicators for assessing progress towards the Europe 2020 targets. The aggregate regional indicator uses the available data at regional level (NUTS 2) to help identify and assess the development each region has taken with respect to the eight Europe 2020 indicators and their national targets (to the extent that they are available). The calculations reflect the diversity of European regions and Member States as well as the significant economic and social impacts of the economic and financial crises. The EU27 as a whole averages just over 60% of the distance to the EU-wide targets. In contrast, five countries – the Czech Republic, Denmark, the Netherlands, Lithuania and Slovenia – have on average achieved at least 80% of the path to the 2020 targets while five other countries – Luxembourg, Spain, Ireland, Cyprus and Malta – are less than 50% along the way.Read more

A Best Practice Platform to Support the Transition Towards a Green Economy (GreenEcoNet)

June 2013 to May 2016

Further Development of International and European Emissions Trading

June 2013 to May 2016
The project accompanies the further development of international and European emissions trading (ETS). At international level the focus is on the implementation and development of ETS, their role in international climate policy, and possibilities of linking between ETS, but also of ETS with other economic instruments (e.g. taxes, offset mechanisms). At the European level the main contents are the reform of the EU ETS, the ETS inclusion of the aviation sector, the inter-dependencies with other climate and energy policy instruments and the market oversight. The Ecologic Institute provides the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) with economic and legal analyses concerning the development and implementation of new concepts and legislation.Read more

The project POLIMP aims at making answers to these issues more easily accessible and understandable. To this end, POLIMP examines knowledge gaps for different policy and decision making levels and covers these with the help of existing research results. The outcomes are communicated and discussed through a series of events, publications and an interactive online knowledge platform.

The research focus lies on the followingRead more
