Analysis in relation to FSC forest certification and timber procurement

May 2003 to May 2005
This research project is carried out on behalf of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) and analyzes aspects relating to the conversion of timber procurement on the federal level in Germany to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. Such a conversion is foreseen by the 2002 coalition agreement of the federal government. Tropical timber shall, in a first step, only be procured from FSC certified sources; and the entire timber procurement shall be converted to this standard until the end of the legislative period, accordingly. Finding and Implementing Synergies Between MEAs in Relation to the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Forests

Several multilateral environmental agreements relate to forests (e.g. Convention on Biological Diversity, Framework Convention on Climate Change, Ramsar Convention, World Heritage Convention, etc.), but so far their interrelationship is not synergistic.

The challenge of finding synergy is an important one in its own right, but has become all the more urgent given the recent establishment of the UN Forum on Forests.
