Public Participation in SIAs of Trade Agreements

Since 1999, the European Commission has been undertaking a series of Sustainable Impact Assessments (SIAs) of multilateral and regional trade agreements. On invitation, Markus Knigge presented at the EASY-ECO conference, organised by the Impact Assessment Research Centre in the University of Manchester's School of Environment and Development, a paper on the role of civil society engagement in these assessments. The presentation focused on the objectives of stakeholder consultations, methodologies for participation, the interplay with the negotiation process and the impediments for effective participation of civil society.

Peer-Review Handbook for National Sustainable Development Strategies

June 2005 to September 2005
The EU and Member States' sustainable development strategies were largely developed in isolation and at different times. They consequently vary considerably in terms of their content and their approach. The objective of this project is to develop a handbook of guidance for conducting reviews and peer reviews of national sustainable development strategies in the EU. This involves designing a template, method and core specifications for reviews, so that a similar approach can be taken towards different national sustainable development strategies. Contributions to Generational Accounting to Assess Sustainability

What does Germany’s frequently mentioned population decrease actually mean for sustainable development? How can social security systems, but also the provision of wastewater services and a functioning transport infrastructure be maintained within this context? Intellectual property right (IPR) rules have strong impacts on economic growth, environmental protection and social objectives. Within the IPDEV project Ecologic identifies IPR-related policies which are supportive to sustainable development goals. Based on quantitative and qualitative analysis it is investigated how especially EU-candidate countries and developing countries can take maximum advantage of IPRs rules to support sustainable development.

Evaluation of the Commission's urban Cooperation Framework

Together with the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) London and the Institute for European Policy Prague, Ecologic is evaluating the European Co-operation Framework to promote Urban Sustainable Development. A midterm review of the co-operation framework is being undertaken. On this basis the Commission will decide on its future design.

The co-operation framework to promote Urban Sustainable Development aims to provide financial and technical support to networks of local authorities for the exchange of good practice in relation to urban sustainable development.
