Final end-of-the-year push: already nearly 1,000 signatures

The memorandum “Understand – Evaluate – Design. Transdisciplinary knowledge for a sustainable society” has been presented by leading stakeholders in transdisciplinary sustainability research. Having first been discussed in March 2012, it was presented to Federal Minister of Education and Research Prof. Dr. Annette Schavan with preliminary signatures in June and discussed in the research committee of the German Bundestag in that same month.

Since then, more than 900 people have signed the memorandum, and the opportunity to do so remains open until the end of the 2012 Year of Science, entitled "Future Project Earth." Chances are good that the 1,000-signature mark will be reached.

The memorandum reflects the authors’ hopes that social-ecological research (SÖF) will be significantly deepened and expanded in the coming years – institutionally as well as in terms of content and organization. The memorandum provides suggestions on how to support specific research fields and the overall structural development of social-ecological research activities.
