Panel discussion

On 7 November 2018, federal ministers Elisabeth Köstinger, Norbert Hofer and Heinz Faßmann kicked-off the process for the development of a national bioeconomy strategy in Austria. In this context, a conference entitled "Bioeconomy: Sustainable and Circular" was organised, which brought together relevant stakeholders as part of an intensified discourse about the future of the bioeconomy in Austria. Ecologic Institute's Holger Gerdes had been invited to take part in a panel discussion, which took place in the frame of the conference.

In October 2018, the European Commission has published the new EU Bioeconomy Strategy. The aim of the conference, which took place in Vienna, was to provide inputs for the strategy process in Austria and to discuss the new EU Bioeconomy Strategy with representatives of the European Commission as well as national and European bioeconomy stakeholders.

In the context of the panel discussion, Holger Gerdes, Senior Fellow at Ecologic Institute, shared insights and lessons learned regarding the participatory development of national and regional bioeconomy strategies. A specific focus was put on the engagement of civil society actors in these strategy processes, and on the effective communication of the bioeconomy concept towards the general public.

The conference, which was attended by around 200 bioeconomy stakeholders, was moderated by Manuela Raidl.
