Financing energy efficiency measures and R&D in emerging economies: A comparative analysis EU-US

Part of the project "Transatlantic Opportunities for Meeting Global Challenges in Energy Efficiency and Low Carbon Technology", Dominic Marcellino (Ecologic Institute Fellow) presented the results of a research paper, which was written with Christiane Gerstetter, at a conference in Berkeley, California. The conference, held at University of California, Berkeley, on 11 and 12 February 2011, where researchers delivered initial results.

The two-day conference is part of the research initiative led by Prof. Frank Converey and the Urban Institute of Ireland of the University College, Dublin. The project is funded by the European Commission. Dominic's presentation [pdf, 2 MB, English]outlined the public funding that the EU and US make available for energy efficiency projects, through bilateral and multilateral mechanisms. The report also gave an initial assessment of several funding mechanisms based on the criteria of: climate impact; ownership and involvement of stakeholders and civil society; the disbursement of funds; and coordination with other mechanisms. A final policy brief, building from the initial research and adding insights from private sources of financing for energy efficiency projects, will be prepared and presented at the project's culminating conference in Paris (France) from 16 to 17 June 2011.
