In December 2011 Ecologic Institute and the Institute for Energy Economics and the Rational Use of Energy (IER) at the University of Stuttgart began a 2-year study funded by the German Environmental Agency (UBA) on the chances, risks, and limitations of the World Health Organization’s Environmental Burden of Disease (EBD) methododology. The purpose of the study is to review the EBD method and develop concrete proposals with respect to its application in Germany. This includes the selection of up to 15 health endpoints linked to important environmental risk factors and the development of a concept for calculating missing disability weights.

On Friday, 20 September 2013, Ecologic Institute Berlin and the IER held an expert meeting to present and discuss the study’s preliminary results. The meeting took place on the premises of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Reactor Safety in Berlin. The participants represented academia, federal and state health and environmental authorities as well as legal experts. Their valuable comments will inform the final phase of the project.
