UNDP Strategy on Environmental Mainstreaming

Project
Duration
-

Sustainable development calls for the integration of environmental protection requirements into international development projects.  Ecologic assists the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in creating a UNDP Strategy on Environmental Mainstreaming.

UNDP, following instructions from its Executive Board in 1999, has begun integrating environmental management into all its activities.  In this context, UNDP is preparing a comprehensive, agency-wide initiative to include environmental considerations in all UNDP policies, programmes and operations.  Previous work resulted in an initial framework for action that was adopted in 2000. From 2001 to 2003, the focus was on the development of a UNDP corporate policy for environmental mainstreaming, including an action plan, a system for monitoring and assessing progress under each component of the action plan and the selection of pilot initiatives.  Ecologic assists in the drawing up and communication of the UNDP Strategy on Environmental Mainstreaming, including in the process lessons learned from experiences in OECD agencies and the Cardiff Environmental Policy Integration Process of the European Union. These experiences are related to UNDP as a multilateral institution with a focus on corporate policy setting and the programming cycle.
