The Impacts of Meat Consumption – Keynote and Presentation for the Student Workshop and Berlin Student Bishop Election

Nearly one hundred 16 year old Protestant students came together in Berlin for a workshop on the topic: "What to eat and the role of meat". The topic was chosen by the students to find out more about the impacts of their eating habits and to learn what a change in consumption patters could look like. 

The event opened with a keynote speech from Stephanie Wunder from the Ecologic Institute. Within her presentation, she focused on the different impacts of eating habits and meat consumption, focusing in particular on environmental, animal welfare, health, global justice and food security aspects.

Within five additional smaller workshops the students had the opportunity to discuss, exchange views and further their understanding of specific aspects of food and meat production. The event closed with this years election of Berlins "student bishops". Within their mandate, the student bishops want to engage the public to facilitate a higher level of awareness of society’s eating habits. In the framework of their outrech activities, they also meet with the Berlin-Neukölln major Hein Buschkowsky, the starred chef Matthias Buchholz and others.

A reduction in meat consumption can bring multiple benefits, to the environment and to human health. It is also an important step towards improving animal welfare in agriculture and fighting global hunger.
