Ecologic joins the Bellagio Forum for Sustainable Development

News

The Bellagio Forum for Sustainable Development (BFSD) is an international network of grant-providing institutions striving to attain environmental balance, economic stability and social progress throughout the world. Ecologic joins the forum to contribute to programme development, notably on policy issues.

For some time, Ecologic has been co-operating with the Bellagio Forum for Sustainable Development and some of its member organisations. One notable example was the International Conference on transatlantic relations and environmental diplomacy hosted by the Luso-American Foundation (FLAD) in Lisbon, in March 2000, leading to a book on "International Environmental Policymaking" and a WSSD policy brief [pdf, 1,1 MB, English] with key messages for the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg. The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), a Bellagio Forum member, also supported this project.

Another was the international Conference "Applying EU Environmental Legislation in the Field of Marine Protection" on the Ionian Island of Zakynthos during the Greek Presidency of the European Union. Ecologic, inter alia, prepared a Mediterranean policy brief on environmental and foreign policy regime cooperation in the region.

Most recently, Ecologic published Michael Northrop's transatlantic review of measures to reduce greenhouse gas emission on the basis of the May 2003 "Conference of Reducers" organised by the Rockefeller Brothers Funds (RBF) and the GMF.

Ecologic currently also co-operates with the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), or the Regional Environmental Center in Szentendre near Budapest, for instance.

Michael Hoelz, of the Deutsche Bank Americas Foundation and Chairman of the Bellagio Forum for the Sustainable Development (BFSD), declared: "Ecologic is a unique organization, and the BFSD is pleased to count it among its members.  Whereas, [Ecologic has] worked together with the Forum and our members in the past, it is the hope of the board, that [Ecologic's] membership will only serve to strengthen ties and multiply the opportunities for co-operation".
