Land and Ecosystem Degradation and Desertification: Assessing the Fit of Responses (LEDDRA)

April 2010 to March 2014

The Ecologic Institute is a part of LEDDRA consortium. Launched in April 2010, the project will add new and will refine existing scientific and policy-relevant knowledge, especially within a cross-national context in the perspective of elaborating scientifically sound practices and informed policies to combat land and ecosystem degradation and desertification. A brochure was published that represents the LEDDRA philosophy, approach, objectives, methodology, case study sites and partners and can be downloaded.

Climate Change, Hydro-conflicts and Human Security (CLICO)

January 2010 to December 2012

Climate change poses several threats to human security. Hydro-climatic hazards such as droughts and floods have the potential to trigger or exacerbate social tensions, intra- and inter-state conflict. The EU-funded project CLICO will examine the relationships between hydro-climatic hazards, human security and conflict. The project will also develop recommendations for the best types of policies and institutions to avoid or better prepare for water conflicts related to climate change.

Mountain Sustainability: Transforming Research into Practice (mountain.TRIP)

December 2009 to November 2011
Global change holds many risks for European mountain regions. Melting glaciers, changes in permafrost and vegetation, as well as political, economic and cultural globalisation present dangers for mountain populations. Numerous research projects have produced valuable findings to ensure sustainable development in European mountain regions. Mountain.TRIP starts where these projects stop: translating research findings into useful information for practitioners.Read more

Linking Impact Assessment Instruments to Sustainability Expertise (LIAISE)

November 2009 to April 2014

Ecologic Institute implemented an ongoing project evaluation of the LIAISE network of excellence to assess the outcomes and the impacts of the LIAISE Network of Excellence. The main purpose of this was to identify and exploit opportunities to bridge the existing gap between the research and the policy community in the field of Impact Assessment (IA) and to improve the use of IA tools in policy making.Read more

Biodiversity of Freshwater Ecosystems: Status, Trends, Pressures, and Conservation Priorities (BioFresh)

November 2009 to April 2014

Freshwater biodiversity patterns and the processes that maintain them at European and global scale are poorly understood for most freshwater organisms. The BioFresh FP7 project built a public biodiversity information platform to bring together the vast amount of information on freshwater biodiversity currently scattered among a wide range of databases. This portal allows scientists and planners to evaluate and examine how freshwater biodiversity responds to environmental pressures for more effective conservation planning.

One Planet Economy Network: Europe (OPEN: EU)

September 2009 to August 2011

As the world's largest economy, Europe must embark upon an immediate and major transformation to avert dangerous climate change and prevent ecosystem collapse. Currently, the impact of the European economy is nearly three times larger than what is required for a sustainable world. The goal of the One Planet Economy Network: Europe (OPEN: EU) Project therefore was to help transform the EU economy to a One Planet Economy by 2050.

Integrating Mainstream Economic Indicators with Sustainable Development Objectives (IN-STREAM)

October 2008 to September 2011
Mainstream economic indicators such as GDP are useful measures with great influence on public and private decisions, but they are flawed as measures of human welfare and give little feedback on progress on environmental goals and sustainable development. This project, through both qualitative and quantitative analysis, aimed to develop new recommendation for indicators that measure progress in economic success, human well-being, environmental protection, and long-term sustainability.Read more
