Key Performance Indicators for Transboundary Basins in Africa

This project aims at developing a set of governance as well as technical indicators to be used in analyzing the current performance of transboundary river and lake basins in Africa and to test these indicator sets in order to support management processes at the basin level in selected basins. After the initial discussions, which were started during a first joint workshop in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso in November 2007, three focused workshops were held with representatives from selected basin organizations.

Integrating Mainstream Economic Indicators with Sustainable Development Objectives (IN-STREAM)

Mainstream economic indicators such as GDP are useful measures with great influence on public and private decisions, but they are flawed as measures of human welfare and give little feedback on progress on environmental goals and sustainable development. Potential of the Ecological Footprint for Monitoring Environmental Impact from Natural Resource Use

Ecologic led a comprehensive review of possible resource-specific indicators that might be used to monitor the decoupling of resource use from negative environmental impacts. The study focused particularly on the Ecological Footprint indicator and also developed a small set of indicators that together could assess progress toward decoupling. The study employed several evaluation methodologies, including RACER analysis, SWOT analysis and expert survey techniques.

Analysis of Yale-Environmental Performance Index (EPI)

October 2006 to November 2006

The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) identifies targets for several core environmental policy categories and measures how close countries come to meet them. Ecologic conducted a stocktaking and analysis of the data sources of the EPI for Germany, complemented by an assessment of the applied method and methodologies of the Index. Based on this assessment, both the scientific and political relevance of the index for German Environmental Policy performance were determined.

On occasion of a dissemination seminar held in the context of the Waterbench-Project on ‚Water Utility Performance Benchmarking in Ukraine‘ Nicole Kranz spoke about selected benchmarking and performance indicator systems, best practice and experience from an international perspective.
