Funded by the National Climate Initiative (NKI) of the Federal Environment Ministry (BMUB), the sixth meeting of the scientific support working group for the municipalities taking part in the project "Master Plan for 100% Climate Change Mitigation" was held on 14 and 15 May 2014 at the seaside resort of Warnemünde.

The working group meeting was hosted by the City of Rostock at the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research (IOW) in Warnemünde. Representatives of the various municipalities working in part with the master plan attended the event in addition to representatives of the BMUB, Project Management Jülich (PtJ) and scientific researchers. The event opened with a boat tour from Rostock to Warnemünde. During the event, participants were informed about the implementation of climate protection initiatives along the coast and in the port of Rostock. The following day was used for focused professional exchange. The focus of these talks was on the master plans in practice and their implementation phase (Phase II).

The senator for Buildings and Environment of the City of Rostock, Holger Matthäus, opened the event and welcomed participants to the IOW. The welcome session was followed by a presentation by Arne Riedel (Ecologic Institute) and Benjamin Gugel (Institut für Energie- und Umweltforschung) who gave an overview of specific action plans and financial planning in the municipalities. Representatives from Hanover, Heidelberg and Marburg-Biedenkopf presented the preparation of their master plans and solutions to potential challenges in three different working groups.

In the afternoon, the municipality representatives discussed different aspects of public relations work, communication and potential municipal implementation measures for establishment of the master plans in Phase II. Representatives of Marburg-Biedenkopf provided important insights of a citizens’ report from Osnabrück regarding communication in the regions, which implemented a master plan. The report also concerned Rostock and the involvement of important key actors.
