Arctic Summer College 2013 – Launch

On Earth Day 2013, the Center for Strategic and International Studies and Ecologic Institute officially launched the 2013 Arctic Summer College. Following successful programs in 2011 and 2012, the Arctic Summer College 2013 again creates a network of emerging leaders and experts that are brought together for 8 weeks in web-based seminars (webinars) from 8 July to 26 August 2013 on Mondays from 18:00-20:00 Central European Time. The program aims to build a lasting, policy-oriented network of Arctic professionals to strengthen communication between peoples and nations, scientific disciplines, policy areas, and across the science-policy field to improve environmental governance in the Arctic region.

The Arctic region is a unique place at a unique moment in time; decision-makers have the opportunity to set a new course for expanding natural resource development and establish a model of sustainability for the global community while respecting the rights of indigenous peoples. Recognizing and taking advantage of this tremendous window of opportunity, the Arctic Summer College convenes interdisciplinary participants and experts from various institutions in webinars and online discussions, and sustains a community that can more effectively influence policies respecting the rights and interests of the peoples living in the Arctic and protecting the Arctic's fragile environment.

Ecologic Institute is joined in convening the Arctic Summer College with institutional partners Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Embassy of Canada, Germany, and partner and sponsor WWF.

Participation in the Arctic Summer College is open to applicants with ideally 5-10 years of experience in a related field, and a desire to share perspectives and seek professional collaboration with a network of peers. The course will be conducted in English.

Ecologic Institute's Arctic Summer College, supported by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, hosted a side event on sustainable development in the Arctic that welcomed over 50 participants in its first session during the Arctic Circle Assembly on 20 October 2018. Project

"Strengthening Cooperation between Arctic and Non-Arctic Countries" was the theme of a meeting of Arctic Think Tanks at the Arctic Circle Assembly 2018 in Reykjavík, Iceland. The focus was on the role and functions of policy institutes – or think tanks – in addressing the specific challenges of the Circumpolar North and how its peoples and countries relate with the rest of the world. The meeting was convened by the Arctic Summer College.

The webinar series, which was conceived by Ecologic Institute in 2011, covered in 2018 four thematic modules: (1) Environmental Sciences, (2) Energy and Resources, (3) International Governance, and (4) Social Sciences. This book, edited by Ecologic Institute's Brendan O'Donnell, Max Gruenig, and Arne Riedel, highlights both the diversity of perspectives and approaches to Arctic research and the inherent interdisciplinary nature of studying and understanding this incomparable region. The chapters are divided into four liberally-defined sections to provide space for dynamic interpretation and dialogue in search of sustainable solutions to the issues facing the Arctic. From governance to technology, scientific research to social systems, human health to economic development, the authors discuss fundamental questions while looking toward the Arctic’s future.
