The role of renewable energy is increasing globally. Renewable energy sources are supposed to meet half of Germany's energy demand by 2050. In this article, the authors provide an overview on current developments in the law for renewable energy.

The article covers the German and European regulations that aim to increase use of renewable energy for the production of electricity, heat and cooling, as well as operating power for vehicles. Additionally, it covers the latest jurisdiction. It becomes clear that renewable energy, especially in the context of climate change and increasing dependence from energy imports, is gaining importance and that a new field of regulation is emerging.

The article is published in issue 1, volume 18, Zeitschrift für Umweltrecht.
