News
In a series of articles and multimedia examining China's pollution crisis entitled "Choking on Growth", the New York Times focuses an instalment on how "China Grabs West’s Smoke-Spewing Factories". R. Andreas Kraemer of Ecologic was interviewed for the article, which was also published under the title "As West's industry moves East, China now the world's smokestack" in the International Herald Tribune.

The story follows a former ThyssenKrupp steel mill from Dortmund, Andreas' home town in the German Ruhr district industrial area, which was dismantled and rebuilt in Handan, Hebei Province, China.

The article, published on 21 December 2007, describes how in its rush to recreate the industrial revolution that made the West rich, China has absorbed industries that were once major polluters in the West. It questions the way in which environmental progress is achieved, the relocation of industries, the emissions associated with industries, and the damaging ecological footprint of production and consumption.
