Ecologic Institute provides advice on international practices and capacity building in emissions trading to the Sino-German Climate Change Programme implemented by the German Agency for International Co-operation (GIZ) and the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) of the People’s Republic of China.

The Sino-German Climate Change Programme addresses China’s needs for climate mitigation and adaption. The four-year programme consists of three different components:

  1. Capacity building on climate mitigation and adaptation for Chinese decision makers and experts,
  2. Development of mitigation strategies for the transportation sector,
  3. Development of mitigation strategies for the power sector.

The programme is implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, in partnership with the NDRC as political partner in China.

As part of this project, Michael Mehling (Ecologic Institute) has contributed to the development of training modules on the design and implementation of emissions trading systems (ETS) in China, in order to build capacity on emissions trading for up to 2000 government officials and other stakeholders at the regional level.
