The Working Group on "Emissions Trading as a Means to Combat the Impacts of Greenhouse Gases" has been created according to the German Federal Government's Climate Protection Programme of 18 October 2000. Its aim is to evaluate the possibilities of establishing a national emissions trading system, which takes into account existing national instruments, the European concept of emission trading as well as the Climate Framework Convention and the Kyoto-Protocol.

Ecologic organised a workshop for the exchange of practical experiences with various pilot projects on implementing the Water Framework Directive in Germany. This included the programming, organisation and a written summary of the event.

Ecologic produced a brochure on the implementation of the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme in financial institutions (FEMAS). The target audience of the brochure were financial institutions that have not yet participated in FEMAS.

How democratic is Europe? Is it getting worse? Is it getting better? Should we care? Do we care? The European Public Space Observatory project (EUROPUB) will assemble information that allows the monitoring of European democracy in the 21st century in the context of the emerging institutional constellations and socio-political practices of the European Union and the process of European integration.

The Directive on Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC Directive) as adopted in 1996 was to be transposed by the Member States by 1999. The Accession Countries are obliged to transpose and implement the directive before joining the European Union. Germany and other Member States are assisting the Accession Countries in the pre-accession process. This Ecologic report, entitled "Economic Aspects of the Implementation of the IPPC Directive in Germany – An analysis against the background of the situation in the Czech Republic", made up part of this assistance.

Bär, Stefani; Ingmar von Homeyer; Anneke Klasing et. al. 2001: A Nice Environment for Enlargement? An Analysis of the Treaty of Nice and its Effects on the Environmental Policy of the European Union with a Special View to Enlargement. Berlin.

There are several direct links between the WFD and nature conservation directives such as the Habitats and the Birds Directives. It is however mainly the integrated approach of the WFD which constitutes the closest link between these two areas. Ecologic analysed these aspects of the WFD and prepared a background paper on that issue.

The results of the flagship project on "Institutional Interaction" on Conflicts and Synergies between International and EU Environmental Institutions, financed by the European Commission (GD Research) and Ecologic, were presented and discussed with scholars at two Annual Conventions of the International Studies Association (ISA) in Portland, Oregon, in 2003 and in San Diego, California, in 2006. Sebastian Oberthür and Thomas Gehring chaired the sessions with scientists from the Institutional Interaction project team presenting, and Oran Young leading the discussion on the interaction and synergies among institutions in international environmental governance.
