DEMEAU is a three-year EU FP7-funded project to demonstrate promising technologies that tackle emerging pollutants in water and wastewater. DEMEAU provides environmental impact and costs assessments (i.e. life cycle assessment and life cost assessment) and showcases four groups of technologies: managed aquifer recharge, hybrid ceramic membrane filtration, hybrid advanced oxidation and bioassays. The objective of DEMEAU is to demonstrate the suitability and cost-effectiveness of innovative methods and technologies to reduce levels of emerging pollutants in water and wastewater.

As part of the Sustainable Development Strategy process, a conference entitled "Dialogue for the National Sustainable Development Strategy: How could its environmental profile be strengthened?" was held on 18-19 March 2004. Ecologic Institute conceptually prepared the conference and wrote the final report. Six topics of cross-sectional interest were chosen and guidelines for discussions developed.

As part of implementing the Directive on Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC-Directive), the Best Available Techniques (BAT) for waste treatment industries were identified in a European-wide process and described in the BAT REFerence document (BREF) "waste treatment industries".

The European Commission regularly tracks the progress towards sustainable development objectives within the EU and the individual Member States, drawing upon sustainable development indicators (SDIs). In a consortium with the Vienna University of Economics and Business, INFRAS and the Haymarket Media Group, Ecologic Institute was drafting these monitoring reports for the years 2013 and 2015 on behalf of Eurostat. Ecologic covered the analysis on Natural Resources, Climate Change and Energy and Global Partnership.

Sustainable river basin planning and management are not "business-as-usual" approaches, creating exceptional challenges for water managers across Europe. To address these challenges, additional knowledge and know-how in designing dissemination activities and management approaches are needed. Ulf Stein from Ecologic Institute and Beatriz Medina from Amphos21 held a lecture on "Communicating Science" as part of the second WaterDiss2.0 Summer School.

Arne Riedel, Researcher at Ecologic Institute, presented the institutional framework for the Arctic and its changes as well as the possible influence of Arctic Council observers. Taking the expansion of regional interests into account, the presentation also examined the role of Arctic Council observer states in the possible concept of an "Arctic Community." He outlined the possibilities for observer states to influence the policies of Arctic states within and outside of the Arctic Council and concluded such observer states have been (and will likely remain) demanding actors in Arctic governance. The presentation slides are available for download.

In this document Ecologic Institute presents a concept for the online presentation and dissemination of DG Environment's planned Composite Index on Environmental Pressures (CIEP).

A high-level UK delegation led by Caroline Flint MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, visited Berlin and Hamburg as part of a three-day study tour to discuss various aspects of Germany’s energy transition (Energiewende). A particular focus was placed on decentralised energy systems and the financing of community energy projects. The programme was opened by R. Andreas Kraemer, Director of Ecologic Institute, who provided an introduction to Germany’s decision to pursue the Energiewende, placing it in both national and international contexts and examining its economic, environmental, and societal dimensions.

European Union (EU) legislation, such as the Water Framework Directive (WFD), as well as international, national, and regional environmental policies and strategies explicitly acknowledge the importance of environmental costs and benefits and the need to integrate them into the policy-making process. However, the application of valuation studies to policy often involves a trade-off between the accuracy of the required analysis and the necessity to include all costs and benefits associated with the different policy options. Thus, there is no accepted EU-wide approach on how to deal with environmental benefits in the policy process.

How can climate policies be designed, what impacts do they have and what other options are there? These are important questions to stakeholders and policy-makers. The project POLIMP aims at making answers to these issues more easily accessible and understandable. To this end, POLIMP examines knowledge gaps for different policy and decision-making levels and covers these with the help of existing research results. The outcomes are communicated and discussed through a series of events, publications and an interactive online knowledge platform.
