This paper sums up the results of the third workshop in the Forum on Fish Protection and Downstream Migration. The workshop addressed the biological foundations and management strategies for the protection and preservation of fish populations. The special focus of the workshop was aimed at the challenges to protecting and preserving fish populations during their downstream migrations at dams, hydropower structures, and water extraction facilities.

The paper is exclusively based on issues that were raised at the workshop, drawn up and discussed by the participants. The paper [pdf, 841 KB, German] is available for download.

The facilitation of downstream fish migration requires a good knowledge of population ecology.

Ecologic Institute coordinated the organisation of the 9th Workshop on Fish Protection and Downstream Migration, dedicated to the topic of "Technical-Hydraulic Assessment of Fish Protection and Downstream Migration at Hydropower Plants". A programme flyer were developed and designed to provide relevant content on conference context, agenda, and the venue in a concerted way to participants.

The two-day workshop, funded under the BMUV's Environmental Research Plan, took place on 30 and 31 May 2022 at the Federal Environment Agency in Dessau (Germany) and was dedicated to the topic of "Technical-Hydraulic Assessment of Fish Protection and Downstream Migration at Hydropower Plants".

Project

With the aim of achieving "good ecological status" in all water bodies by 2015, the Water Framework Directive requires Member States to put more emphasis on hydromorphological issues and watercourse connectivity for the conservation and restoration of fish populations. The aim for the third cycle of the "Forum Fish Protection and Downstream Migration" is to continue the series of workshops on fish protection and downstream migration and to evaluate them in papers, reports and publications. In addition, the website forum-fischschutz.de is updated and improved. Additionally in this project, the fourth UBA Hydromorphology Workshop is organised.

During the first period of the Forum Fish Protection and Downstream Fish Migration, more than 200 people from different fields, such as water management and nature conservation by the states and the federal government, the federal waterway administration and transport development, the energy industry, the water engineering, fishery biology, nature conservation, fishery and fishery associations and the university science were involved. In the second cycle of the Forum from 2015 to 2018, three two-day events were held to deepen the statements of the first cycle and to continue the constructive dialogue.
