On 6 May, Arne Riedel and Fenja Kroos from Ecologic Institute participated in a closed-door panel discussion titled "Building Alliances in a Contested Environment: Perspectives on International Security, Energy and Science Cooperation in the Arctic." The event was jointly organised by the Embassy of Canada to Germany and the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) and took place at the Embassy of Canada in Berlin.

To gather input and contribute to building a network, Ecologic Institute organized and hosted a virtual workshop on 30 October 2025, with input presentations. The workshop continued with a moderated exchange with 15 external experts, building on guiding questions on flexible governance arrangements, potential gaps, and ideas for practical next steps and potentials for collaboration.

Melting sea ice, new shipping routes and growing geopolitical tensions are changing the Arctic – a region where the consequences of climate change are particularly evident. Arne Riedel, Senior Fellow at Ecologic Institute, spoke about the ecological, political and security developments in this sensitive region of the world in an interview with Axel Dorloff (rbb Inforadio / Wissenswerte).

Ecologic Institute's task is to analyse the governance frameworks that influence Arctic ecosystems and to identify where adaptive management strategies could strengthen resilience. For this purpose, Ecologic Institute brings together the research results of YESSS that are relevant for governance, and investigates local, regional, and international legal and policy frameworks, including those shaped by the Svalbard Treaty and the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.
