On 6 May, Arne Riedel and Fenja Kroos from Ecologic Institute participated in a closed-door panel discussion titled "Building Alliances in a Contested Environment: Perspectives on International Security, Energy and Science Cooperation in the Arctic." The event was jointly organised by the Embassy of Canada to Germany and the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) and took place at the Embassy of Canada in Berlin.
Held on the margins of the Arctic Circle Forum Berlin, which focused on “The Arctic at Crossroads,” the discussion addressed the challenges and opportunities for renewed multilateral cooperation in the Arctic against the backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions, accelerating climate change and increasing global demand for natural resources.
The panel was moderated by Robert Kadas, Deputy Senior Arctic Official at Global Affairs Canada, and centred on three key dimensions of Arctic cooperation: security and defence, energy security, and science cooperation. Introductory remarks were provided by Dr. Volker Rachold (Head of the German Arctic Office), Dr. Franziska Hagedorn (Federal Foreign Office), and Loyle Campbell (DGAP).
The discussion was conducted under the Chatham House Rule and offered participants the opportunity for an open exchange on the future of multilateral collaboration in a rapidly changing Arctic.
