Methods for the Valuation of the Environmental Burden of Disease

Project
Duration
-

The valuation of damages and risks for the human health caused by environmental pressures is a methodological challenge, as there are no market prices for most of those damages and risks. But a number of economic methods have been developed to estimate and value those risks and damages.

The project for the German Umweltbundesamt should develop suggestions how these methods for quantification and valuation can be applied in Germany and can be linked to existing German methods for quantification of environmental effects.

The project conducted with the German BIPRO GmbH starts with an extensive literature review on the current state of the national and international research on the topic. The identified methods will then be analysed regarding their applicability in the German context. For some key environmental stressors the most applicable methods will be tested.

The work should contribute to the further development of the UBA Methodological Convention 2.0 for estimates of environmental costs.
