RISE UP for the Ocean is a global network linking grassroots movements with decision-making spaces, with a mission to unite and amplify civil society and community voices to influence global ocean policy and decision-making. In its work, RISE UP builds on the Blue Call to Action launched in 2019, which sets out agreed priorities, objectives and targets – not based on what is politically convenient but on what the ocean truly needs to recover.
RISE UP focuses on four areas:
- Advancing the BBNJ Agreement
- Supporting Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries
- Reinforcing Opposition to Deep-Sea Mining
- Championing Ocean-Based Climate Action
RISE UP is fiscally hosted by The Ocean Foundation and supported by, inter alia, the Oceano Azul Foundation and the Oak Foundation.
Starting in 2026, RISE UP for the Ocean updated its governance structure and created a new Oversight Board. Ecologic Institute Founder R. Andreas Kraemer was appointed as a member of the Oversight Board for an initial three-year term by the RISE UP Advisory Group and elected by the Oversight Board as its inaugural chairman for a one-year term.
