A conference on managing water resources in European mountain environments took place in the context of the Marie Curie Training Programme European Water Sustainable Goals (ESWG 2007-2010). Eleftheria Kampa spoke on heavily modified water bodies and hydromorphological pressures in the Water Framework Directive. Her presentation is available for download.

In accordance with its Article 4(3), the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) allows Member States to identify surface water bodies which have been physically altered by human activity as "heavily modified" under specific circumstances. This presentation introduces the process of provisionally identifying and later designating heavily modified water bodies (HMWB). Explicit focus is placed on the steps of the provisional identification of HMWB, including hydromorphological risk assessment. HMWB provisional identification has recently been completed in the EU Member States and was included in their Article 5 reports to the European Commission. The WFD Article 5 reports referred to the characteristics of each river basin district, the review of the environmental impact of human activity and the economic analysis of water use.

The presentation of Eleftheria Kampa is available for download [pdf, English, 2.46 MB].
