Since the Security Council debated the security implications of climate change in April 2007, security aspects of climate change rank high on the political agenda of the UN. In a presentation at Haus Rissen Hamburg, Nils Meyer-Ohlendorf discussed the contribution of the UN to environmental security.

In his presentation, Nils Meyer-Ohlendorf concludes that the UN, as a truly global organization with a long history in maintaining peace, is the right place to address climate change and security threats arising from climate change. However, the UN has not contributed to formulating concrete policy responses to the security implications of climate change.
