  1. Climate Change, Water Conflicts and Human Security: Research Results and Policy Recommendations - European Policy Brief

The final policy brief of the European Union research project "Climate Change, Hydro-conflicts and Human Security" (CLICO) presents the results of three years of research in the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and the Sahel (MMES). It also gives policy recommendations. The policy brief is available for download.

  2. Costs and Benefits of Options for Adapting to Climate Change: Analysis of 28 Adaptation Options for Germany - Publication

A new study about the costs and benefits of adaptation measures in Germany shows that many such measures can deliver results and are economically viable. Included here are green roofs that protect against heat waves in cities, the restoration of floodplains, and heat-resistant asphalt for street cover. Measures to increase awareness of adaptation opportunities were also found to have positive effects. Aside from the economic assessment, a broader set of criteria for assessing these measures was developed that can give political actors a better idea about which measures deliver positive co-benefits or are relatively easy to implement. The study is available for download.

  3. On the Road to 2050 – Improving the EU Climate Policy - Event & CECILIA2050 Website Launch

Following the successful two-day internal kick-off meeting held in Berlin in November, CECILIA2050's approach was first presented to an interested audience at the UN climate conference in Doha on 3 December 2012. The three-year project involves drafting recommendations for a suitable mix of instruments to help the EU achieve the 2050 emission reduction targets set by Heads of State and Government in 2009. Ecologic Institute's Head of Climate Matthias Duwe laid out how CECILIA2050 results will serve to inform a review of EU climate policy, including its flagship instrument, the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), over the course of the next three years. The presentations are available for download and project website is now online.

  4. Changing Climate and Energy - Moderation

The Federal Academy for Public Administration (BAköV) hosted a high-level event as part of the "Brühler Expert Discussions." Professors Klaus Töpfer, Sabine Schlacke, Jürgen Schmid, and Ulrich Cubasch presented their knowledge and recommendations regarding changes in climate and the energy system. The event was moderated by Dr. Camilla Bausch.

  5. Decoupling Growth from Resource Use and Environmental Degradation - DYNAMIX Website Launch

At the beginning of September 2012, a new European Union (EU) research project on resource efficiency started at Ecologic Institute. DYNAMIX will propose policy mixes that can shift the EU onto a pathway where its resource use and the associated environmental impacts decline in absolute terms while the economy continues to thrive. This FP7 research project, led by Ecologic Institute, combines quantitative modeling and qualitative assessments to provide EU and national policy-makers with tangible support towards implementing resource efficiency policies. The project website is now online.

  6. Demonstration of Promising Technologies to Address Emerging Pollutants in Water and Waste Water - DEMEAU Website Launch & Event

The European Union-funded project DEMEAU kicked off on 8 and 9 November 2012 at Dunea, the water utility of The Hague and its surrounding area. This event marked the beginning of a three-year demonstration of promising technologies that tackle emerging pollutants in water and wastewater. DEMEAU promotes the uptake of prototypes and practices from previous EU research projects, including promoting initiatives in the water sector to deal with emerging pollutants. Please visit the newly launched DEMEAU website for further information about the project and news stories about recent developments.

  7. European Innovation for Sustainable Water Management: Users meet Researchers - Event

On 22 November 2012, Ecologic Institute organized a side-event entitled ‘European Innovation for Sustainable Water Management: Users meet Researchers’ at the IWRM Karlsruhe 2012. The event presented five European research projects and their innovative outputs, covering the topics of sustainable urban water management and the adaptation of freshwater ecosystem management to climate change. Ulf Stein and Johanna von Toggenburg organized the side-event as part of WaterDiss2.0, a project within the 7th European Union-funded Framework Programme, which supports research projects in the water sector along with the transfer of their results to intended users, thereby linking science, policy, and practice.

  8. Connecting Sustainability and Economic Indicators - Publication

Mainstream economic indicators still dominate practical policy making. In this journal article, Lucas Porsch explains how the connection of sustainability measures and these mainstream indicators can be a tool for policy makers to understand and manage trade-offs between different sustainability categories.
