Learning everything from books? Not at the University of Applied Sciences in Bremen which emphasizes the incorporation of practical knowledge into students’ academic routine. It provides students with added value as it illustrates future career opportunities. Therefore, Doris Knoblauch and Evelyn Lukat, senior fellow and researcher at Ecologic Institute, organized the seminar "Think Tank Policy Consulting" in 2015/2016. It was the sixth time that the seminar was held by employees of Ecologic Institute.

At the climate summit in Cancun (2010), industrialized parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) agreed to develop Low Carbon Development Strategies (LCDS) as a means of realizing the long-term emissions cuts required in the face of climate change. These committments were formally translated into EU law through the Monitoring Mechanism Regulation in 2013, and January 2015 saw the first round of LCDS reporting by all EU Member States. Member States must report on any updates on the LCDS on a biennial basis.

The aim of this workshop is to identify and discuss challenges, opportunities, and policy gaps surrounding the development of bioeconomy strategies across Europe. The outcome of this process will be a list of targeted policy recommendations for the (further) development of balanced and informed bioeconomy strategies at the regional, national and European level.

As part of ECF’s Governance Cluster, Ecologic Institute analyses adequate planning and reporting approaches for the 2030 energy and climate framework and on options to assess national contributions, address the gap issue and ensure compliance. Ecologic Institute also provides ongoing legal advice in the context of the Effort Sharing Decision revision and strategic guidance within the ECF Governance Cluster.

The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety has commissioned Prognos AG and Ecologic Institute with a project assessing the interdependencies between climate protection measures and policies and gas infrastructure planning in Europe. As part of the project Ecologic Institute is conducting a process analysis of gas infrastructure planning in Europe and six selected Member States. Ecologic Institute will also conduct an analysis of political, social, economic and technical risks related to the application of low-carbon alternatives to gas infrastructure development, including energy efficiency and renewable energy.

By linking different ETS, regulators create interdependence: decisions taken in one system have effects on the linked systems. Since ETS are evolving over time, there is a need for joint governance structures, to ensure compatibility of the linked systems, to avoid unwanted inferences, and to prepare for eventual disputes. In this report for the German Emissions Trading Authority, Benjamin Görlach, Michael Mehling and Ennid Roberts have looked into possible solutions for these challenges. This document aims to offer a synthesis and discussion of the methodological process and results of implementing climate change adaptation case study research, reporting on the key messages and lessons learnt through a critical comparison of case studies that equally accounts for the stakeholders' perspectives. The deliverable is structured in four chapters.

This BioSTEP document builds on the previous Deliverable 2.1 which collected information about the impacts of bioeconomy-related products in a database. Rather than attempting to exhaustively list the whole plethora of products and processes in the bioeconomy, the database presents a taxonomy of the main product categories, production processes and types of feedstock in the bioeconomy as well as some salient sustainability impacts and governance issues. The document is available for download.

There are many synergies between socio-economic priorities and biodiversity objectives, with varying degrees of evidence to support those connections. This project, led by IEEP, focuses on these synergies in the EU Member States and explores what the EU can do via its European Semester to raise awareness of the potential for biodiversity to help attain many national socio-economic priorities and therewith encourage due macro-economic policies. While previous analyses have provided rather general assessments of the economic and social benefits of biodiversity, this work will provide a more detailed and country specific analysis and identify synergies in each EU Member State as well as Member State specific data to feed into the European Semester process.
