The project serves to develop a dynamic and quantitative computer-based sustainabiliy model, that can be used in management games and enables to better understand societal interactions in the context of technological efficiency improvements, social innovation and socio-economic effects. The model focuses on further developing a systemic understanding on dynamic interactions of sustainable developments – much less on providing a clear-cut simulation prognostic or projection.

The international community has come up with numerous and often complex suggestions for the design of a new climate agreement to be adopted during the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP21) in Paris in 2015 (‘2015 Agreement’). These design options are currently being discussed under Workstream 1 of the ‘Ad-hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action’ (ADP) by Parties to the UNFCCC. This report provides a practical criteria matrix to assist policy makers in evaluating and comparing different proposals for the 2015 Agreement.

The foreign companies come in numbers. They dispel the people from the rural areas which were used by them for centuries. They don't confer with the indigenous people. The deals are made in hidden chambers. The only things that the locals see are other people with big tractors invading their areas. The sample is available for download.

From an economic and climate policy perspective, linking emissions trading systems is an attractive option. For that reason, the linking of emissions trading systems has received an increasing amount of attention in the political debate as well as in the research in recent years. In that context, issues that have received less attention are the legal and institutional arrangements for linked ETS: On what legal basis can Emissions Trading Systems be linked, which potential difficulties should be covered in a linking agreement, how can decisions be agreed upon and differences be settled and how could the linking agreement be terminated?

This project took a closer look at regional institutions in the European electricity sector and how they could potentially contribute to a future EU energy governance as proposed by the EU Commission in its 2030 climate and energy package. Ecologic Institute produced a policy paper on the challenges and opportunities of regional cooperation for reaching the EU 2030 climate and energy targets.

Cigarette smoking is a leading risk factor for morbidity and premature mortality in the United States, yet information about smoking prevalence and trends is not routinely available below the state level, impeding local-level action. Tanja Srebotnjak of Ecologic Institute and co-authors now publish county-level estimates of cigarette smoking prevalence: These provide a unique opportunity to assess where prevalence remains high and where progress has been slow. The estimates provide the data needed to better develop and implement strategies at a local and at a state level to further reduce the burden imposed by cigarette smoking.

On 7 October 2014, Ecologic Institute's Rodrigo Vidaurre held a presentation on regional governance responses to increasing drought risks at the 2014 international conference "Our Climate – Our Future". The talk, part of the Conference Session on "Integrated strategies for climate change mitigation and adaptation", presented the methodology and insights generated by an analysis of the regional governance settings. The regional conference “Closing the mineral cycle at farm level – Good practices to reduce nutrient loss in Southern and Eastern Ireland” took place on 28th October 2014 at the Killeshin Hotel, Portlaoise, Ireland. The aim of the conference was to present the results of the study “Resource efficiency in practice – Closing mineral cycles” commissioned by the DG Environment, European Commission.
