The knowledge surrounding the persistence and negative impacts of pharmaceuticals in the environment is currently poorly understood by many healthcare professionals, or is only present in a rudimentary form in teaching, training and continuing education. Due to their multi-faceted contact with patients, pharmacists and physicians are important multipliers who are able to transfer knowledge through direct contact with patients and customers. An improved knowledge of this topic can empower both pharmacists and physicians, as well as patients, to be more ecologically conscious in their behavior when prescribing, consuming, and disposing of medications.

This report presents a work plan for incorporating the issue of pharmaceuticals in the environment into the education of the medical and pharmaceutical professions in Germany. It first presents an overview of the relevant German structures in the education and training of medical and pharmaceutical professions. In a second step, it provides concrete recommendations for the integration of the topic into teaching (studies and vocational training), continuing education and training as well as for the dissemination of the contents and the educational materials to be developed in the project.
