This project aims to support the European Commission in implementing the new EU Forest Strategy for 2030. Led by Milieu and supported by consortium partners Stritih, Ecologic, and IEEP, the project provides expert guidance on the implementation of the strategy and its outcomes, with a focus on forest science and societal aspects related to the role of healthy and resilient forests.
Analysis of criteria for sustainable forest management
The project team conducts a comprehensive scientific literature review to perform a performance and gap analysis of existing criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management, as well as to assess relevant certification systems. Furthermore, the team supports the dissemination and adoption of guidelines for closer-to-nature forestry, biodiversity-friendly afforestation, tree planting, and the protection of primary and old-growth forests.
Comparison of requirements for forest management plans in the EU
Based on this work, the team will carry out a comparative assessment and gap analysis of the requirements and criteria of Member States for forest management plans, aligning them with the climate and biodiversity objectives of the EU Forest Strategy. Additional tasks include mapping old-growth forests within the EU and examining the use of the Natura 2000 logo for non-wood forest products.
Communication and stakeholder engagement
In addition to research and analysis, Milieu and its partners will support the EU Forest Strategy 2030 through communication efforts and stakeholder engagement.
