Fabian Haase works as a Research Assistant at Ecologic Institute, where he supports the Coastal and Marine Team. His research focuses on the German North Sea and Baltic Sea, as well as on the role of ecosystems in promoting climate resilience. He is fluent in German and English.

At Ecologic Institute, Fabian Haase contributes to the project "The German North Sea and Baltic Sea Over 100 Years Ago", which examines the historical species composition in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and aims to provide an overview of these ecosystems before intensive human use. He is also involved in the "Tropical Adapt" project, which supports the promotion of ecosystem-based adaptation measures in tropical and subtropical regions.

Fabian Haase is studying Economics at the Berlin School of Economics and Law. During his studies, he developed an interest in emissions trading, environmental taxation, and payments for ecosystem services, as well as the integration of ecological principles into economic decision-making.

The workshop, held on October 7–8, 2025, brought together experts from around the world to discuss how ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) can address sea-level rise and strengthen coastal resilience. Around 40 participants exchanged experiences, explored practical and financial approaches – including blue carbon initiatives and blended funding models – and deepened collaboration across science, policy, and practice.

For five days, experts from politics, science and environmental organisations discussed more protection for the oceans at the 3rd UN Ocean Conference in Nice: Climate change, overfishing and pollution are threatening marine biodiversity worldwide. Europeans were strongly represented, as were countries from the Global South, as well as important G20 countries such as Australia, India, Brazil and China. Dr Grit Martinez took part in the UN Ocean Conference on behalf of Ecologic Institute's Coastal and Marine Research Division. At the conference, a sincere commitment to the protection and sustainable use of the oceans was evident.

As part of the annual Marine Nature Conservation Colloquium, scientists from the research projects commissioned by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) present their interim results and open questions. On behalf of Ecologic Institute, Dr. Grit Martinez presented initial results from the research project The German North Sea and Baltic Sea over 100 years ago (HISTOMAR). The "Shifting Baseline Syndrome" was the focus of the presentation and the subsequent discussion.

The aim of the project is to obtain as accurate an overview as possible of the ecosystems in the German North Sea and Baltic Sea before the start of intensive human use. This will support the development of a scientific basis for decision-making that will enable the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation and the North Sea and Baltic Sea authorities to identify the need for political action to establish specific marine protected areas, to reintroduce projects in the German North Sea and Baltic Sea and to initiate appropriate measures.
