How can meaningful community and stakeholder engagement strengthen ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) for coastal areas and make coastal resilience efforts more effective, equitable, and sustainable in the long term?

This virtual workshop brings together experts, practitioners, and policymakers to explore how participatory approaches, local knowledge, and strong partnerships can improve the design, implementation, and governance of EbA initiatives in coastal contexts. Building on insights from the first workshop in the series, this second event will focus on:

  • Participatory approaches and meeting local needs
  • Using and valuing local knowledge
  • Building and maintaining partnerships
  • Effective communication with stakeholders and decision-makers
  • Governance structures that enable inclusive and impactful EbA processes

A central element of the workshop will be highly participatory discussion sessions, providing space for all participants to share insights from practical experience, reflect on challenges, and jointly identify lessons learned.

Call for contributions

Participants are strongly encouraged to submit contributions related to community and stakeholder engagement, including case studies, innovative ideas, and policy- or practice-oriented recommendations. Selected contributions will be featured in short presentations of up to 10 minutes, followed by discussion. If you are interested in contributing, please contact Nico Stelljes by 6 March 2026.

Workshop series

This workshop is the second in a series of three consecutive events on coastal ecosystem-based adaptation. The first workshop focused on stocktake and financing aspects of EbA (materials available online). The third workshop, dedicated to scaling up EbA, will take place virtually on 2 and 3 July 2026.

Further details and registration information will be published soon.

From participatory approaches to long-term partnerships, this workshop highlights practical lessons on how community engagement can strengthen the design, implementation, and impact of coastal EbA initiatives.
