Ulrich Wilhelm
Our inaugural event was a resounding success. In an intimate setting, our researchers discussed Europe's capacity for innovation and long-term resilience with representatives from politics, public authorities, and civil society. We were honored to welcome Ulrich Wilhelm as our keynote speaker – a distinguished lawyer, journalist, and former government spokesman and former Director of Bayerischer Rundfunk. Drawing from his extensive experience in leadership roles across government and media, Mr. Wilhelm offered valuable insights.
Since Europe has been one of our main areas of research since our Institute's founding, it was only fitting that our first Horizon Scan placed Europe at the center of the conversation. The evening’s lively discussion centered on pressing questions such as:
- Can Europe assert itself in a new global order?
- Can European integration endure while remaining a beacon of democracy and sustainability?
The challenges we face today make one thing clear: even a country as economically strong as Germany cannot tackle them alone. A united, collaborative Europe stands a far better chance of success. Participants quickly agreed – mutual trust is the foundation of a strong and effective Europe.
Ulrich Wilhelm left the audience with a strong message of hope:
"There's always reason to be confident, and no situation is ever hopeless. Europe has many prerequisites to assert itself. Democracy and constitutional states provide important guarantees for every individual's life, which would be lacking in an arbitrary state rife with corruption and violence. This will remain true despite all the anger and other disappointments."
Horizon Scan is the Ecologic Institute's new, exclusive discussion series dedicated to questions about the future – and how we can shape it sustainably.
