NormTransform Symposium

Advertising not only influences what we buy; it also helps shape our perceptions of what constitutes normal or desirable consumption. At the final symposium of the NormTransform research project on 25 November 2026 in Vienna, representatives from research, policy, business and civil society will discuss the potential of advertising restrictions to support more climate-friendly diets – and how research findings can inform practical action. Online participation is also available.
Using meat consumption as a case study, NormTransform examines how advertising shapes consumption norms and individual behaviour and explores the potential of advertising restrictions to influence consumer choices, societal norms and greenhouse gas emissions. The project combines Warm Data Labs, behavioural experiments and agent-based modelling to better understand how changes in individual behaviour can contribute to broader shifts in norms and value systems.
From Research to Climate Policy and Practice
The NormTransform Final Symposium will present the project's findings and bring them into conversation with perspectives from policy, business and civil society. Discussions will focus on the potential of advertising restrictions as a climate policy instrument, the political, legal and societal conditions that shape their feasibility, and what the findings mean for policy and practice.
