Ruta Landgrebe is a Fellow with Ecologic Institute Berlin, where she has worked since 2002. Her work focuses on the evaluation and development of soil and agricultural policy at European and national levels with a focus on sustainable land use and resource protection. A native Lithuanian, Ruta Landgrebe also works in German and English and has basic knowledge of Russian and French.

Among other research projects, Ruta Landgrebe is working on the 7th Framework Programme (FP7) project Land and Ecosystem Degradation and Desertification: Assessing the Fit of Responses (LEDDRA) , which seeks to identify and evaluate measures to mitigate land and ecosystem degradation and desertification. For this project, she leads the work package on policy analysis. On a project for the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA) that assesses the costs and benefits of the European Soil Framework Directive for Germany, she examines the national requirements to implement the European soil policy.

Her previous work at Ecologic Institute covers a wide range of topics. She has worked on numerous projects for the Directorate-General for Environment (DG Environment) of the European Commission (EC). One example of a project she coordinated, determined the economic and social benefits of the Natura 2000 network by analyzing case studies. The project results were published in the 29th Newsletter Nature and Biodiversity of the EC. As part of a project that focused on integrating agricultural measures into the Water Framework Directive (WFD), she evaluated the environmental effectiveness of measures contributing to diffuse water pollution reduction. Furthermore, she has written the guide, Convergence with EU Air Protection Policies - Short Guide for ENP Partners and Russia, which outlines the compliance benefits of European Union's (EU) air protection policies for the EU's southern and eastern countries. On behalf of the European Parliament, she also assessed the environmental impacts of EU agricultural subsidies and was able to publish the results.

Prior to joining Ecologic Institute, Ruta Landgrebe worked at the Center for Environmental Policy (AAPC) in Vilnius (Lithuania). Her work focused on the evaluation and development of air quality and climate policy in Lithuania. From 1997 to 1998, she worked for the Lithuanian Ministry of Environment in the area of air quality for the Programme of Community aid to the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (PHARE). PHARE funded Lithuania's accession and integration process into the EU. Between 1994 and 1997, Ruta Landgrebe worked in a regional environmental agency on implementating of air quality, water, quality, and noise monitoring programs.

Ruta Landgrebe completed her first Master of Environmental Science at the Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas (Lithuania). Her second master's degree, accredited through the University of Manchester, was obtained at the Central European University in Budapest (Hungary) in environmental sciences and policy.

EU Policy Indicators Project
Sustainable development is a long-term political goal of the European Union (EU), which has become even more important since the adoption of sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the European Green Deal. Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Union, has been monitoring progress in the field of sustainable development for years with the help of indicator sets. Since 2008, Ecologic Institute, together with the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, INFRAS and the Haymarket Media Group, has been producing monitoring reports on the subject. To support Member States meet their reporting requirements and improve their monitoring, Ecologic Institute developed a site selection guidance. The use of this guidance will help Member States develop a representative network of ecosystem monitoring sites across the EU, covering freshwater ecosystems, natural and semi-natural habitats as well as forests. The guidance on how sites are selected is voluntary for the Member States to apply in accordance with their own circumstances. It can be used for setting up a new monitoring network or expanding/improving an existing network to identify the most appropriate locations to monitor.
