As the institution in charge of the German government sponsored initiative "Scientific Coordination of the Support Measure for Sustainable Management" (NaWiKo), Ecologic Institute was involved with several of its working papers. This report summarizes the key findings of the CIRCULAR IMPACTS project and provides an impact analysis setting out impacts of circular-economy transitions on the macroeconomy and society. The results of case studies conducted within the project are included as are results from modelling done by external parties, accompanied by an overview of the methodologies used. This report thus provides an overview of presently available quantitative evidence on the macroeconomic and societal impacts of the circular economy. In addition, an overview of recent policy development on EU level in relation to the circular economy is provided, as are the key conclusions and policy messages from the project. Lastly, recommendations for future circular economy research are given, with the aim of improving scenario-based impact analyses for the European policymaking context.

This publication provides a quantitative overview of the development and status of environmental crime in Germany between 2004 and 2016, based on data from the police crime statistics ("Polizeiliche Kriminalstatistik") and the Federal Statistical Office's criminal prosecution statistics ("Strafverfolgungsstatistik"). The report provides both, an overview of general trends and an in-depth account of individual environmental offences. In addition, the publication contains data on administrative offences relating to trafficking of protected species. The report was prepared by a team from Ecologic Institute on behalf of the German Federal Environment Agency.

This brochure is a 'light' version of Eurostat's publication 'Sustainable development in the European Union – 2018 monitoring report on progress towards the SDGs in an EU context', conveying its main messages in a visual and concise way. The brochure provides an updated snapshot of the current situation concerning 100 indicators related to the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs). It thus provides a snapshot of the key trends related to sustainable development in the European Union. Ecologic Institute's authors covered the chapters on SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 15 (Life on Land) SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). This study, co-authored by Raffaele Piria, provides an overview of how Community Choice Aggregations (CCAs) work and of their legal framework, and discusses their objectives. The second part of the study takes a closer look at the special case of California: the new competition in the retail market, the spread of CCAs, their relationship to the previous monopolists in electricity supply, and effects on the regulatory framework are discussed by the authors.

This report summarizes the activities and findings of the 1st COACCH co-design workshop, held in Brussels in May 2018. The event included around 40 participants, with representation across the four COACCH working groups: policy makers, investors, business and industry, research and civil society. The workshop presented the COACCH co-production protocol and identified the key end-users needs of stakeholders. It discussed the in COACCH prepared report on "Knowledge Synthesis and Gap Analysis on Climate Impact Analysis, Economic Costs and Scenarios", with working sessions by sectors to identify stakeholder priorities and help inform the COACCH research agenda. Further stakeholder sessions were held on climate and socio-economic scenarios and on for stakeholder interesting tipping points, to provide additional inputs for the design of COACCH's research questions. Finally, the workshop discussed possible joint knowledge products and started the evaluation of the co-design process with a first survey.

Strong national climate governance frameworks are crucial to establish and maintain political support for the low-carbon transition and facilitate the implementation of policies. The truly robust governance frameworks combine key elements such as legally binding targets reached with high level of political support, broad stakeholder participation and review mechanisms that allow for adjustments over time. Creation of dedicated institutions with clearly assigned responsibilities and powers is essential to ensure the robustness and effectiveness of the framework.
