In this project Ecologic Institute supported the European Climate Foundation (ECF) in strengthening EU and Member State climate governance frameworks to better deliver on the EU's climate-neutrality objective. Building on more than a decade of collaboration, the project combined scientific analysis and targeted convening to help identify priority options for 'levelling up' national governance standards and to inform the upcoming revision of the EU Governance Regulation expected in 2025–2026.
Key tasks included:
- the organization and implementation of expert workshops for the EU climate policy research community to agree on key priorities for improving national climate governance;
- updating and expanding the Climate Framework Laws Info-Matrix, including new and pending national climate laws and related institutions, while also testing how generative AI can support climate governance research generally;
- serving as a knowledge partner and co-lead of ECF’s Governance Regulation sub-hub, providing ongoing research input and strategic advice; and
- producing a compact thought-leadership analysis on the EU Simplification Agenda and its implications for climate governance to feed into the Governance Regulation review and wider advocacy.
