Extending the lifespan of products through reuse and repair is a key strategy for reducing waste and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. To make the potential of these approaches more visible, transparent methods for calculating environmental impacts and effective means of communication are essential.
As part of the expert dialogue "Second-Hand Instead of New – Calculating and Communicating CO₂ Savings Potential", taking place online on September 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the Berlin Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment invites participants to explore current approaches to quantifying CO₂ savings in the context of waste prevention.
Among other topics, the event will introduce the CO₂ calculator developed as part of the Re-Use Berlin initiative, which helps visualize concrete savings potentials. Additionally, accompanying communication formats will be presented and initial experiences from practical applications – such as online platforms or secondhand department stores – will be discussed. The event will also explore comparable tools from related fields, such as repair services, the textile sector or industrial waste.
You can find the agenda here. To register, please click on "Registration" above.
The aim of the event is to bring together expertise from practice, public administration, academia, and civil society, and to generate momentum for the further development and implementation of effective assessment and communication strategies related to resource conservation through reuse and repair.
The event targets professionals from practice, civil society, policy, and research who are active in the fields of reuse and repair. The communication formats presented are particularly relevant for secondhand stores and online resale platforms. Furthermore, the expert dialogue is aimed at individuals working with methods for calculating environmental impacts and savings potentials in these areas.
