From 4 to 8 August 2025, the International Academy for Nature Conservation (INA) on the Isle of Vilm hosted the seminar "Putting Nature on a Path to Recovery – Innovations in Ecosystem Restoration", organised by GIZ and KfW on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), in cooperation with BfN. The event brought together an international audience of experts and practitioners in ecosystem restoration, nature conservation, and sustainable development.
Dr. Benjamin Kupilas, Senior Fellow and Coordinator for Biodiversity at Ecologic Institute, contributed with a talk titled "Restoring nature, restoring our future: From global goals to local gains." His presentation introduced the GoNaturePositive! project, providing insights from deliverables D1.1 and D1.3 on the Nature-Positive Economy concept and policy landscape for transformative change in Europe. Beyond GoNaturePositive!, the talk also touched upon Ecologic Institute's activities related to the implementation of the EU Nature Restoration Regulation in Germany, including the support to developing the National Restoration Plan.
The session sparked a discussion on the business case for restoration, including the role of public funding and a growing interest in nature-based enterprises. It also underscored the urgency of accelerating restoration efforts at local, national, and international levels, showcasing the role of restorative nature-based solutions in addressing and communicating the climate and biodiversity crises.
